World’s largest network of Marine Reserves announced

16 Nov

Tony Burke today announced the creation of the world’s largest network of marine parks will go into effect tonight at midnight.

The Australian government has agreed to designate 2.3 million square kilometres of Australia’s oceans as marine reserves, an area almost one-third the size of Australia. That’s the biggest swathe of ocean environment to be protected in the world.

Today is your last chance to help protect our Coral Sea!

10 Sep

Today is the last day for public submissions on the proposed Coral Sea Marine Reserve.  After nearly five years, we’re almost there! Say YES to protecting our Coral Sea!

Say YES to the world’s largest marine park, including almost half a million square kilometers set aside as highly protected.

Australia’s Coral Sea is the jewel in the crown of the Australian government’s proposed national system of marine parks. It’s a vast, healthy, unspoilt ocean ecosystem, home to large ocean giants such as whales, sea turtles, sharks, tuna and marlin.

It’s our last chance today to make sure the government locks in the protection of the region’s unique coral reefs and iconic marine life.

Please spread the word: #marine parks are our future. Our #CoralSea is a marine icon that deserves protection. Take action now:
